might be one of the pulleys, with the engine running put a long handled screw driver onto the bolt of the pulley and put your ear on the handle.
doing that can find which one if it is one.

Hey bud..
You got the little bugger too!
Try...!
Warm start...not hot to touch.
Squeeze the top radiator hose full fist hard, listen for change in dynamics of the noise.
Still under warranty???

there is a slight change.i cant squeeze that hard though, arthritis. no warranty. noise is not there on cold start, has to be warm/hot. using the screwdriver trick it seems worst around where the top radiator hose joins the motor,on the metal connection, but you can hear it on a few different spots.resonance i think.
cheers

bit of an update.went to local mechanic and he thinks it is the alternator. i dont. the noise seems related to heat and water. as the motor warms up
the thermos cut in and the noise slowly goes away until the fans cut out ,temp goes up a bit, noise slowly gets louder, fans cut in and the cycle begins again. i am thinking water pump?
peoples thoughts?
cheers

it could be the water pump, the screw driver trick normally works pretty well by putting it as close to the suspect area while the noise is happening then you move away and see if the sound drops off.

looks like its the water pump. is it worth paying the extra for a genuine holden pump or aftermarket do the job just as well?
cheers

I have used both over the years and have not noticed any difference.
price them both then decide what you want to do.
