Just saw in the latest issue of a certain magazine I'm not sure if I can mention here that dump pipes are really quite hated by their resident engineer. Why is it that they're so illegal?? I mean, the twin 2.5" pipes on my VR dump before they even get to the diff and I haven't died from fumes or anything yet lol I love the sound and I don't intend to get rid of them at all.
Simpy put, by law the exhaust must exit at least 300mm(or somewhere around that) past the last body seam that is completely welded, which includes windows. The reason being is that you could gas yourself. On a long drive, the carbon monoxide will make it's way into the cabin and you will feel drowsy. It may lead to a crash.
Can you have dumpers but put caps over them so it exits normally but when at the drags you can unbolt them? anyone know if thats legit. Cheers
probably not, the law would see that as way to pass inspection but change it back to dump pipes the minute your out the door and down around the corner etc it should be legal though i ran the V6 the other day with only headers and Y pipe and it finally sounded good, should really have it like that all the time:whistling
Hmm. I'll be sure not to gas myself on a long drive....LOL!! Either the vents are blowing air or a window is down all the time. I'm not one for sitting in a stale car. To that end my vents are also almost never on circulate. At least I'm not going to die from my exhaust.... before anyone says it, yes I know it's still very illegal. I however can't justify changing it, there are more important things to do first. The only time I ever notice it is if I cold start it and reverse a bit. Smells a bit like fuel, running rich cold start etc.
The problem with carbon monoxide is that it is odourless, even if you can't smell anything it may still be getting in.
i have a cut out at the diff witch has a bolt on cap so when its all bolted up it exits normaly... it passes rego fine and easy to get off when your at the race track
carbon monoxide is odourless which means if its coming in, you wont notice. it will make you drowsy, and is very, very dangerous. what happens if you run into a car and kill a whole family? whats are your "more important" things?
OK carbon monoxide is odourless, yes. I knew that already. It won't come in somehow WITHOUT all the other exhaust gases, there's no filter that will ONLY LET IN CO. If anything comes in you will be able to smell the other nasty gases with it. As for Reaper's remark, I think that yes I do have other things more important. There would be something about almost every modified car that is technically illegal, except maybe your brand new VE. More important things like getting some rear tyres with tread, I think that's a bigger priority. Or do you disagree? And before anyone asks, no they didn't have any tread when I got them, they were second-hand from a 500hp VX Senator. Sorry for bickering but I think the question I asked was pretty clearly answered, and after that there's no need to post if you can't add anything productive. Sam
