Why are the 6 liters so rattly and noisy when cold?

The only aftermarket lifters I would recommend would be going to a tiebar lifter but they may have the same noise anyways due to the extra link between lifters. Or have the pushrod length checked by a professional engine builder for correct preload/length . As thats where alot of the noise comes from.

I was going to say my previous SS (2000 VT S2) with the GEN3 was the best v8 I've owned. No noises, no oil use and ran Mobil 1 its entire life that I had it. I regret trading it in on the SSV. The car had 140,000klm when I traded it...

The cold knocking I and some others have talked about was not related to lifter tick. The clunking was diagnosed as engine slap (piston slap) My L77 had lifter tick issues but no cold start clunking. The constant ticking (cold, hot, super hot) drove me crazy. It was always there.... anyway its gone now, trying to move on... :)

Its the Mexican quality control. Some hot Mexican Chick is probably putting pistons in wrong way around... kidding (sort of!)

My engine doesn't get the clunk. Lifters rattle for about 3 seconds on cold starts which is normal IMO.

A friend at work has a L98 and it makes a deep growl when cold. It probably lasts for about 3-4 minutes and then all is normal.

It doesn't sound like piston skirt noise that is typically heard on engines running forged pistons (yes i know the standard engines don't run forged slugs) The sound I hear is very similar to main bearing noise.
It would be nice to be able to dimensionally check a clunky engine. Wouldn't be hard to find whats happening.

The most annoying noise on my L98 is the air intake when cold. It goes away as soon as it is warm, but for at least 5-10 mins in the morning it sounds like it has a supercharger on it (I wish LOL).

i get the feeling that you hear a lot more in the alloy engines than the old cast iron jobs

Hi all. Re-opening an old thread. I have a 2015 VF 6L Calais with 25,000km. Exactly 2 yrs old. Since new, has had a definite big end rattle-possibly piston slap. Goes away after 5 min, so difficult for dealer to diagnose. Decided to leave it overnight for a dead cold start up diagnosis. Dealer agrees something is definitely wrong! Didn't even try to convince me they all do that! It's an engine out job to check it out. Only problem for me is they don't have a loan car for a another week. Lucky I have a spare car (my Camp Quality Escarpade VQ Statesman).
I'll keep you informed on progress.
    Cheers, Mike
