Rust is pretty easy to spot and most backyard wreckers have come across it at many stages of tearing down cars to sell online and rip poor innocent people off ;)
If you cant see it best you go to see these specialists, surely they can fix your problem ;)

It is also pretty easy to spot when someone posts up that they don't have any....Best you take some of your own advise for once in your life time

Sounds like your dreading the VL front and rear windscreen cancer word @ rust :(

You can do 2 things, get a quote from a glass specialist for the crack repair and they will advise if needing full windscreen replacement and worry later about any rust if/when you get a respray. :)
Other is take your car into a proper paint and panel shop and get them to remove windscreen and see what rust is lurking underneath. That way you know where you stand and what to do next per your $ budget available. :)

As @losh1971 said most repair shops get an outside glass contractor to do fitting most times usually in shop. Basically see if it’s a repair only first as you have mentioned and if not go to paint/panel shop and take it from there bearing in mind VL’s are notorious for rust eventually in that area. :)

Had to reign in the spending during this pandemic business so I’m a bit late coming back around to this.

It’s been assessed as a definite replacement, so fingers crossed. You’re spot on with that feeling of dread! Cheers for the advice.
get them to come to you most companys have have mobile repairs /fittings and you can watch them and thats the best way to see whats under if the screen need replacing
That sounds like the best option to me, I’m pretty keen to see the condition myself and gauge whether it’s urgent, can wait till the respray or not a problem at all. Thanks for that

Be good to hear the end result....I doubt there will be any rust lurking, if what you say about the car is true.....

Definitely be around when it’s replaced if you can.

Have some touch up paint on hand. Sometimes the windscreen replacemen process can scratch the paintwork under the trim. Also, IIRC (but I could be wrong?) the rubber bit that’s visible inside the car has a steel insert that can also rust.

The last time I had a windscreen replaced on a VL I had a friendly panel beater do the replacement. They outsourced the actual windscreen removal and replacement but they found the start of some rust and touched up the paintwork before the new windscreen was fitted.
