A crossover splits the sound going to the woofer (cuts everything above a certain frequency) and the tweeter (cuts everything below a certain frequency).
Basically, this means you woofer plays the lower frequencies and the tweeter plays the higher frequencies.

Its ok to run the woofer without the crossover, as it has no problems playing high frequencies (well, it just dosent play them as well as a tweeter), but a tweeter should always been connected to a crossover because it will really struggle to play lower frequencies, and eventually will destroy itself if it tries to re-produce bass frequencies.

The crossovers seperate the high and low frequencies, sending the highs to the tweeters and the mids/lows to the woofer.

Your tweeters won't last a day without a crossover, and the woofers will try to play frequencies higher than they are designed to and sound ****
