Not all Sony Head units are bad just the cheeper lower lange ones, if you get one of the more expencive higher up models they can be very good.

I have had my Sony head unit compared to several top of the range Pioneer units and have come out top for sound quality and that is even running though 4x 4way Sony Xplod 6.5 inch speakers in the doors and running a 400watt 12 inch Lightning bolt Sub off an alpine 200watt amp.

I think its the other way around, my entry level xplod head unit is quite comparable to others of its price range (i haven't had any reliability issues) but if you get a high end sony head unit they can be quite good but you could do much better for the price.

I was lucky when purchasing mine, it was on sale down from $1500NZ to $350NZ band new with a 3 year warranty.

If you shop arround you can get very good prices for goods.

to be honest, I do believe it is a reliability issue. The entry level players typical run for forever and a day...theres less to go wrong with them. the S-Chassis I used to see those quite a bit with issues.
