Hello all,

Just thought I'd share an observation; I was at the supermarket tonight and I noticed one of the managers there was walking a bit odd. I know he's about my age and I have noticed that he has easily put on about 30kg in the last year or so. I noticed when he served me half his body seemed to be paralysed, and when he spoke I arrived at the conclusion he has had a stroke recently. Aged maybe 30-31. Poor guy. Made me really think about my lifestyle.

Anyway just thinking we could discuss lifestyle related illness, particularly involving younger people - diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoarthritis, etc. Anyone experienced this? What about a friend or relative?

I think by the time you hit your 40's most of what is going to effect you is raising it's ugly head, especially if your out of shape so to speak.
Sad to say, from my observations, is that most of the damage has been done in your teens and 20's, at this age your young enough to bounce back and soldier on with little or no effect.

I tell my son, ( not yet a teen) if he is playing sport etc and is injured to the point where he is in pain that he should stop and seek first aid, and no, that is not an excuse for piking.
If he is working on the cars or his bike, i make sure he understands what chemicals he maybe working with and how to safely handle them, or if he is swinging a spanner to make sure his hands are clear of a follow through.
Even soft drink is a treat for them, went to a car show on the weekend and it was hot, I bought a can of coke, which the 2 children and I shared, they followed up by asking for a bottle of water each.

We get no favours with aging.

I suffered from osgood–schlatter disease in my teens. it was rather painful and I still sometimes have trouble with it now. it was a direct result of me being a "rough and tumble" kid and not looking after myself when I played sports as a kid. I know I will need surgery later in life to fix it but for now I just wear patella bands and try not to over exert myself when it plays up.

I know when I have kids I'll be drilling into their heads that they need to look after themselves.

another big one is cancer. everyone seems to be getting it now.

JMHO but I think in another 10yrs or so it will come to light that all these chemicals, both in readily available products (think preservatives, flavours etc) and plastics etc are having an effect on our systems, cancer, nervous systems, the brain, the lungs etc.
I even heard of a storey of a guy in the US whom was welding on something he had previously degreased, his nervous system has been permanently and severely compromised when breathed the fumes of the degreaser that was super heated by the the welding...

My son used WD40 for the first time the other day, he asked before using it "what happens if I get it on my hands"?
I told him not to get it on his hands.

From my years at TAFE I was told that the Aust Air Force conducted tests around the 70's where they had volunteers hold their hand in a container of fuel, within a few minutes they were able to detect traces of fuel on their breath.

I have some older adults in my life whose lifestyle choices have recently bit them hard -
Dad is 64, very obese, on blood pressure meds, in very bad need of a new hip. Excess weight will make rehab difficult.
Mum is 60, obese, on blood pressure meds, has needed a new hip and knee, and tires very, very easily.
Family friend is 67, has had a minor stroke, has type II diabetes, and can now no longer drive to see his family.
Given that due to career change I will need to work til I'm 70 to get reasonable super/pension, recent events have made me take stock on things.

A friend of mine is about 30 and already has type 2 diabetes.

I believe obesity will be the 21st century's smoking, in terms of severe public health issue. Sad thing is we live in a society that on one hand promotes obesity through labour-saving devices, supersized portions and processed food, but on the other side promotes dieting through fad diets, and unrealistic depictions of celebrities etc through mass media.

My mates younger sister got diagnosed with schizophrenia, anxiety and severe depression earlier this year and she's only 18. It's heart breaking because she was such a bright, fun, positive and attractive girl. The medication has made her gain more than 20kg and that's made her even more depressed. She's tried to commit suicide a couple of times and it's really taking a toll on her mum.

The worst thing was that the hospital didn't want to have her there. Her brother has moved from WA to Sydney so he could see her often.

osteoarthritis, etc.

Early this year starting getting pains/sorenes in groin inside leg after cardio session/ heavy leg days.

Been lifting on and off for about 6years. Last 2 years taking it seriously.
But after these pains didnt subside went to dosc though maybe hip adductor strain /tear.

After scans/xray/mri/ultra and specialist turns out got mild case FAI (Femoral acetabular impingement - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
And early on set osteoarthritis of the hip joint @ 27yrs old.

Does restrict what i can do/how i do it.
But keep on trucking not gonna let that stop me. not gonna be a sad prick about it.. ppl have alot worse out there.

were all gonna make it.

Since changing career from the media industry to the railway industry (and also moving from Brisbane to Sydney), I've made a concerted effort to eat healthier and be more active. It has helped to drop some weight so far. I'm not getting any younger and don't want to be a medical wreck as I get older.
