At the end of the day it is Holden's responsibility to ensure ongoing parts availability, regardless of the state of its supplier base, as per ACCC regulations.

I know this because I used to work in the aftersales purchasing department at GMH, which was responsible for ensuring continued supply of parts.

I worked in manufacturing for many years and you are right on the money.

There is no actual timeframe for spares for any products on the market though many people actually and wrongly think the 5, 7 or ten year supply periods exist.

Parts supply as per the ACCC guide depends on customer expectations, versus the importance of the part versus the cost of the product versus other sources.

It’s not as complicated as it sounds but in short there will be supply of critical parts but not so much for minor cosmetics.

For example I’ve bought spares of those horrid cheap looking piano black insets in the doors on my Redline that get swirl marks just by looking at them as I know they will eventually look atrocious and I’ll have Buckley’s chance of getting replacements in a few years.

I’ve done the same with a few other bits and pieces so I have genuine Holden parts if I or my family wish to restore the car in years to come.

Parts for the major mechanical aspects of the vehicle will be around for some time and eventually if the market demands, an aftermarket source will come into play.

Since Holden is closing its doors after 2017, how will getting replacement body parts work in the future? More interestingly to me is, how will the owners of HSV's get their parts? On that note, I'm in the states and was hoping to convert my SS front and rear into the VF2 R8 Clubsport/Senator. If there's an aftermarket company that buys the rights to the bar molds, maybe I'll have a better chance at sourcing these parts. Any ideas what the future holds for these HSV parts?
Holden isn't closing its doors but they are ceasing the manufacturing operations. So Holden will still be here & operating but as an importer. They have legal obligations, as others have said in this thread but they also have an existing customer base that they need to look after generally. How that will translate into number of years / range of parts availability remains to be seen but it won't suddenly cease when production finishes.

I should also point out that while I was at GMH we were working on something called the '2030 Project', which is where we looked at every single part and came up with a supply continuity plan out until 2030 (where required).

This involved working with the suppliers and understanding their position, to ensure that they could keep supplying the required parts. A plan B was also devised, which revolved around being ready to resource parts to another key supplier in the event that the original supplier was unable to supply.

We even went into such detail as to document all of the necessary grades of steel that are used, so that as volumes decrease, Holden can consolidate procurement of steel to ensure that suppliers don't have to worry about large MOQ's making production prohibitive and increasing prices to customers.

In many cases, suppliers advised that they couldn't or wouldn't continue to supply, meaning that parts were resourced to other suppliers which kept them in business.

It's also worth remembering that there are a large number of parts shared between the Commodore and previous-gen Camaro, so parts are available from the states as well.

So rest assured, Holden has been working very hard to ensure that parts will be available moving forward.

I'm not too concerned with the mechanical aspect as other cars such as the Camaro, G8, CTS-V, etc. share some same parts. I was mainly concerned with the bumper bars, more specifically HSV bumper bars, among other body parts (ex. lights, exhaust, interior, etc.).

I want to modify my SS, SSV Redline in Australia, into a Gen VF2 R8 Clubsport so should I feel forced to buy it now or will HSV parts be made along with Holden parts? Does HSV have the same responsibility as GM/Holden to supply their parts after production?

HSV have the same legal obligation to provide replacement parts for 'a reasonable amount of time'. It's impossible to tell how available the parts will be in the event of a theoretical future bingle as we will never know when this will occur, but replacement parts will be available somewhere, it just comes down to how much you are willing to pay for them.

How do people in the US get parts for their Pontuac G8s??? What about the older models such as the early Firebirds??

Holden will continue to make cars after the Commodore, it's not the end of the brand. Parts will be easy to get for years to come no different to the Commodore's Holden made in the 80s and 90s.

As for HSV they will also continue to make cars, they just won't be based on Commodore's. There have been rumours of both a Holden Corvette which will provide a HSV line of Corvette too. HSV have already suggested doing a HSV Cruise and there's even misguided rumours of a HSV Camaro for Australia.

HSV will sell Captivas.
We'll be able to get a Captiva with 21" wheels and an HSV badge - now that's something to look forward to!

Sad thing is ... the lame-arses who buy Q7's and X5's and X6's and Rangies and those rubbish Benz gerlytruk pusboxes would swallow it hook, line & sinker ...

I am not concerned about major components like engine, gearbox, panels and suspension but what about specialist things like the heated seats, HUD and even puddle lamp mirrors although the VE Calais had this feature. ???

I have a 13yr old VY S ute Series I & the guys at my local Holden have helped me greatly tracking down what I need. I do know that some parts/trim are hard to get. The best example is the drain tubes on the corner of my rear windows. They stopped making them in 2009. They also have a holder to keep them in place. When I was experiencing leak problems, the tubes were part of the problem. Finding 2nd hand ones is next to impossible as it's exposed to the elements & they eventually crack & split. The only thing I could do was to find the right size tubing from Bunnings & for the holder I had to make modifications to a plastic tap adaptor. No doubt that those with VE-VF utes will have the same problem down the track.

From time to time, I still look online to search for parts/trim that I know will only last for a few years. I know that VE door cards new from Holden are non-existant which I find strange as the VE had a long production run.
