Interesting history lesson. I rember the Honda Civic, was called Honda CVCC ("
Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion") on Mitsubishi was called MCA Jet (MCA stands for
Mitsubishi
Clean
Air). Those days of Jap Tech was about Stratification (
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratified_charge_engine) due to lower Octane Ratings or lets say, the removal of Tetraethyllead as anti-knocking agent. Lead will hinder the Catalythic Converters useless. Therefore, Stratification was a novel idea to ignite the fuel on a rich condition with a carburator with low octane fuel.
My dad bought the 1980 Prelude. Was a CVCC 1800CC motor (Accord drive train). Drove that car for 3 years, was total garbage. Hate it every minute that I drove that piece of rubbish with the Honda Matic 2 Speed. Made me hate Honda forever.
