I think they're the same deal.
Could be wrong. But my fuzzy memory tells me they're the same.

Good luck with it all mate, Hope it all goes smoothly.
Remember, its always easier to pull something apart then it is to work around it. Save yourself the greif and take things apart to begin with. Lost count how many times I've had to save mates from "Impossible" jobs, just because they can't be bothered undoing everything!

i had a look in a catalogue and there was a parts difference beteen a red and black motor so im confused. yeah im planning on pulling it all apart. going to give the carby a real good clean up while im at it. i may swap put the pistons for some flat top ones while im at it too, but ill have to check the current bore of the motor first to see if its a virgin block or not. i seriously doubt its a virgin block though, surely somewhere wouldve bored it out over the past 25 years

You realise you're going to have to pull the crank out to get the pistons out yeah?
Which means new rings/bearings and linished crank.

Its always a good idea to at least hone the bores too.
All that said, I've got a debured VN block and heads here with a set of spiked rods if you're wanting to rebuild a motor. You can have the 304 crank for nothing, needs to be reground.

All Holden V8 head gaskets are the same. There might be a different part number for red heads though as some red 308's ran a steel shim gasket from the factory for higher comp engine, but you won't need those.

Soop, crank out to get the pistons out? Where are you pulling the pistons out from? :p The pistons come out from the top....All you need to do is pop the sump off and undo the rod bolts and pop the rods & pistons out. Although you should really balance the rotating assembly when changing pistons, which requires the crank to be removed. The probably a bore & hone depending on the condition of the bore, but if there is little to no lip you will get away with a hone.

Yeah I know that, But i figured I'm just making work for myself by saying it like that :p

At least If I say the crank has to come out, we don't end up with "My engine is seized and my valves are bent afte rebuild" threads.
