VT SS 5.0L
Hi everyone
Ive recently purchased a VT SS 5.0L with 80,000kms on the clock .
Now its started to clunk a little from the rear when the car comes to a stop, and occasionaly there is a grind when the rear wheels are not level, like going over a speed bump on an angle, u can feel it through the whole car.:ranting: :ranting: :ranting:

Is my diff stuffed?, how hard is it to replace the diff in these things
Does anyone know a diff place in Maitland or Newcastle that is worth going to.

Thanks for any info.

I had the same problem with my VU Ute 5.7V8.

I have been informed that it is a reqular occurance with the Limited Slip Diffs. It is the clutches within the diff that are getting "sticky". In the first instance you replace the diff oil with an additive.... I have done this and it took another say 150kms and it has completely gone. Cost $160NZD

Should try this first before replacing the whole diff anyway.

so they say .... mine didn't. sigh

Zool, Try the very expensive $100 + synth lsd oil first as you will need to do this anyway.

If it's still banging about spend the additional dosh for the $100 additive + you will neede to change over to an upgraded pinion seal with the use of the additive as it will eat the old in-compatible seal.

cheers

if i was you, i would Take the SS to the place you bought it, get it checked out for "diff chatter" & fixed free of charge otherwise..

the lsd takes 1.7 litres of Mobilube SHC ID 80w/140 LSD synthetic diff oil.

i could only buy in 4 litres from a mobil service station + you will need a greese gun or something similar to do the oil fill.

I found the below on some web site that Hopefully explains your situation:

Under certain driving conditions a series of clunks, accompanied at times
with corresponding vibrations, may be experienced by owners of 1997 - 2001
Commodore V8s fitted with LSD. Condition affects both auto and manual.
Symptoms usually occur;
# when the diff oil is warm
# at low speed (such as driving in a car park, driveway etc)
# when turning the steering wheel (rear wheels turning at different rates)
# usually more noticeable in reverse than forward direction

The condition can be described as a slip/stick situation, where the LSD is
slipping and then grabbing again. This condition is known as LSD chatter.

The official fix is to drain the oil out of the diff. Replace the pinion
seal with the revised seal which is compatible with the chemical properties
of the friction modifier. Next, add ONE bottle of friction modifier LSD
additive to the diff. Then fill diff with Mobilube SHC ID synthetic diff
oil. Spicer Axle Aust say that if the friction modifier is added without
changing the pinion seal, then the pinion seal will eventually fail due to
the chemical incompatibility between the additive and the seal.

The above is a summary of the official fix according to the manufacturer of
the diff, not my own opinion. In my experience, this fix is effective. It
seems people have their own opinions on what fixes this problem, but having
actually performed this fix on more than 100 cars in the last two years, I
can say from experience that this fix is extremely effective

it took me a while to get this info, but it solved what i was told to be a very common problem with the these lsd's

Reco LSD IRS Diff with Oil leak!!!

I've just my LSD IRS diff reco'ed with all bearings and a new LSD clutch Pack. Had it done last week, cost me $840. Now loosing oil out the rear of the unit. All seals on both the output shafts are dry as is the Tail shaft Pinon bearing seal. Gasket around the rear housing is dry too.
It's where the unit casing mounts on the very rear of the diff mounts to the body. It's pissing out of it. Mess all over my towbar and fuel tank.

Question: Is there a breather or gromet missing?

I'd better take it back!

Any clues?

Thanks.
