the correct way is to jack the rear of the car up off the ground & put some jack stands under each side.remove the 2 rear wheels & you will see a round hole down the bottom of the hub/rotor which may or may not have a rubber grommet in it.remove grommet, insert medium screwdriver into hole & you will feel a toothed wheel.turn the toothed wheel over with the blade of the screwdriver.one way tightens the other loosens.when you have gone tight enough to stop you being able to turn the hub by hand loosen it off about 4-5 clicks so it turns again.repeat for other side.try your handbrake see how high it comes up,if your happy with it put the grommet back in,wheels on & your set.if it still comes up to high you have let it off too much so readjust.you want about 3-4 clicks pull up on the handle.not enough & your handbrake wont release properly & you will smell burning brakes.hope this helps,be patient as it is a pain of a job sometimes.
cheers

Or you could lift up the boot on the handbrake lever and adjust the nut that's under there.

yes you can do it that way but it is not the correct way as it will stretch the cable fairly quickly.but it is a quick temporary fix, your right.

You only really need to adjust the shoes if you drive with the handbrake on, as it is only used while you are stationary, the shoes are not subject to wear like a disc pad. Because of the constant pulling on of the handbrake, the cable does stretch, so really, the only adjustment that should need to be done is the nut on the lever. This takes up the slack in the cable and ensures a firm application of the parkbrakes when you pull the lever up.

Another fix is not to let other people drive your car. Especially if they own a sh**ter, they will yank that level for all it's worth because that's what they do in their pile of crap.

This is not true sorry, the shoes have to be adjusted as they come away from the hub as the cable stretches, I fully adjusted the nut at the lever at first, it made no difference at all. this is only for minor adjustments. The correct way is the shoe adjustment.
