I was just looking at some ideas on improving the light output from the head lights on my Calais and I was wondering if when I switch on my high beams and the unshielded element in the h4 bulb light up as well as the h1 high beam bulb does the shielded filament also stay alight if not are there any issues with doing a mod so that when I switch on high beam I have all six filament lit instead of the four I am sure are standard

No they do not come on... wiring cant handle it and headlifht assembly cant handle excess heat.

Won't make much difference to the light output if you enabled the low beam filament to come on with the high beam, to see just hold the stalk back when swapping between high & low (from memory when on high and you hold it they will both light up or it may be when on low going to high but pretty sure it's the first)
It'll only illuminates the road a bit more directly infront of the car.
