So I have tested and pulled the sleeve out more and the more it shows the lower the refs are for gear changes ie if I pull it right out it changes at 3000rpm. If I let the accelerator down and kickdown self adjust it changes around the 5000rpm, highest I can tell is 5200rpm. This seems to be the best option.

If it doesn't make power to 6000rpm it'll change up a gear. If it's lacking power in upper rpms, it won't keep revving. Maybe valve springs or damaged cam lobes, poor tune etc.

Stock 304 runs out of puff at 5000 rpm anyway so not much point making it rev much more.

I'd try a little more timing and see what happens.

Yep. I got no idea how many km this motor has done so maybe time to freshen it up.

Stocker rev limiters cut in about 5400rpm which you'll rarely hit with stock setups. They flat anyway long way before that anyway.

On an old motor do compression test to check still good other than that worn out timing chain.

Even with bolt on mods they'll rarely spin off mark unless use some brake unless ofcourse it's got a decent sized stally & shorter diff gears.

We ran a similar cam twin 2.5 exhaust opened up stock headers and real tune with 2500 converter and ran high 12s was night and day difference to stock just stomp it from idle and blaze to top gear lol

bit of a thread dig, but was that on a stock motor?

So that's a Crane 276? on a stock intake right?
Do you think the next cam up with a TP dual plane and heads with 3 angle and bowl job would be the go or stick with the 276?

The one v85000i asked about was a kelford cams D cam. The one I just fitted and tuned was a comp cam suited for carby with 109 lsa but with banana manifold still the owner wanted a choppy idle it surprisingly just gained stupid amounts of torque and hp over the whole rpm range lol I'll try get a pic of the dyno sheet tomorrow
