Sounds to me like the 2-3 clutch pack is gone, its a trans out fix. Best case scenario new clutch pack and refit, worse case (nore likely if car is old) the rest of the box will also need rebuilding since its out. Either way its going to cost a bit. I don't know what type of car it is, or what your looking for but as above putting in a change over box may be the easiest.

Can get box from wreckers for 500.looking at just pulling old one out and replacing with that.not 100% sure yet.can't quite make the codes out think it threw a 67 code from what I've read its something to do with torque converter

I don't reckon it's worth stuffing around trying to repair the old box. As you have said, a second hand one isn't dear, and it's probably much cheaper, quicker and easier than trying to fix the old one.

Somebody had this problem a few weeks ago, it ended up being that their shifter linkages needed to be adjusted.
