Hi

I am looking at replacing my front speakers in my VZ commodore.
I have a spare Soundstream LIL Wonder 2.40 amp which have the following specs:

60 RMS x2 at 4ohm
120 RMS x2 at 2ohm
240 RMS x1 at 4 ohm bridged

I am looking at Alpine Type R splits which JB Hifi have quoted me $269 for a pair. These speakers can produce 110 Watt RMS

Has anyone used these before or are there anything else people would recommend? I have a budget of up to or around $300 for a set of splits.

Also would the amp be under powering these speakers too much??

Any Suggestions would be great.... Cheers

Alpine make a very good speaker, thats a ok price on those too.

You could also look at Focal, Hertz, Rainbow, for more quality speakers.

Mate speakers don't produce power they "handle" it, your amp produces the power. You will be running 60wrms x 2 into 4 ohms with nearly any splits you buy. The Alpine type R's will be a little under powered with this amp but would still sound good. I was looking at upgrading my fronts the other day to the type R but i thought they sounded a little bright, the equivelant JL speaker had a better mid bass reproduction and just sounded more rounded, they also have a lower power rating which would better suit your amp. The jl's would be my choice especially if you aint running loud subs.

I have type R subs and as spice weasel said they do handle plenty of punishment!

Listen to plenty and see what you like, can't go wrong with either alpine or JL

And make sure you get your amps and impedance all sorted out, otherwise you could wreck some new speakers via DC Clipping. Ask some people with the know-how to make sure you avoid under powering your speakers; (subs, splits etc)

Thanks everyone

I did a google search on speaker clipping and apparently under powering a speaker actually can cause more damage than over powering ie. if a speaker is rated 60Watt RMS then run them on a maybe 75Watt + RMS amp (same for subs).

I am currently running a soundstream 350Watt RMS 12" sub with the soundstream LIL Wonder 2.40 amp at 4ohms 240RMS, I realise this has been under powering the sub and this is why I am upgrading to a higher power mono block Amp (Leaving the soundstream 2.40 spare to power some splits).

I just didn’t realise it was that important, I thought the speaker would not be running to its full potential and distorting before it should, not damaging the speaker :bang: I guess it is very important.

Apparently most speakers are blown from clipping (due to under powering).

I might have a look at the JL Audio too as I think they are around 60Watt RMS from memory??

Thanks again for your advice

but also you need to realise that clipping from the amp is easy to hear usually.
as long as you dont generally break your possesions you will not break the speakers.
it all comes down to the person driving the system.
