Could be a worn out thrust bearing, which would be good because that's way down at the "cheap" end of the gearbox repairs spectrum. If you're getting a new clutch anyway they should replace the bearing at the same time.

Hmmm master cylinder didn't even cross my mind... Would make sense too.

Thanks for the help everyone. As the problem persists it has become easier to diagnose. There is no doubt there's a problem with disengaging the clutch, which would be a worn thrust bearing or poorly operating master cylinder. :) Yay!

master cylinder isn't leaking at all, clutch is actually fine by the feel of it.

further research and opinions have it pointing towards the spigot/pilot bearing on the shaft itself. Still cheaper than a whole clutch kit
