The seals on my compressor have gone. It happened about 5-6 years ago and I had a new compressor put in. You can buy them on ebay for around $200-250 and they are fine.

I am thinking about putting it in myself. It looks easy as. But I know you have to release the gas. Is this easy to do (I know it has to be contained, but if fridges can rot away in the open, Im sure this wont matter). Can anyone explain the process with photos?

Option 2: Im thinking about having the compressor re-conditioned. However, usually re-conditioned stuff isnt much cheaper. Does anyone know what new seals etc would cost?

Legally speaking, you cant release the gas..
If you wonna stick to legal get a place to remove the gas.for you?
If not just unbolt a.hose or nut on AC condensor

If the compressor seals have gone, and have been gone for a few years now, then there wont be any refrigerant gas left in the system . Just remove the old compressor and fit the new compressor and then take it to an A/C specialist to get it regassed. Make sure they check the compressor oil before they do the regas. Its also handy to get some refrigerant dye added with the gas as this will show up any leaks in the system (if any).
Even if there is some gas left in the system ,no ones gonna know if you just let it out.

Thanks. Will the gas burn if it touches me?

What would it cost to have new seals etc put in my compressor? I can get a new one for $250, which option would be better?

Cold burn, quite painful. But get it in your lungs or eyes and your day will go south very quickly.

Get a new one is my opinion. Get new seals and maybe later the clutch will **** itself. Save yourself the trouble and get a nice new one.

Also I'd pay a bit more and get a nice genuine one, Holden Commodore VT VY VX VU Air conditioning Compressor for V6 ecotec genuine!! | eBay . Why buy Chinese crap when the factory ones have proven to have a good 10 years or longer in them.

Thanks. The guy said that the sealz were gone and that it was "leaking from everywhere". I know the sealz are only around $25. Is this the only place gas could leak from? I just put a new compressor in about 4yrs ago. It was a Delphi. Could it have died already? Or can i just replace the seals and have it regassed? Where else can the compressor go wrong? Does it have seals?

In this case, you need to have it gassed with the dye, if it then runs out of gas again, they can see where it is leaking from.
