a gauge will never be able to tell you how full your battery is lol you will want a volt gauge which will tell you a few things like if the alternator is charging the battery properly, and if you hook it up straight to the battery so its on all the time it will show you what the voltage drops down to when you crank the engine so if the voltage drops below 10 volts this is a good indication your battery is on its way out. I wouldnt bother with an ammeter as they do bugger all really.
