whats the difference between a physio and chryo?

I have a weak lower back, degeneration of the core muscle, and have been to my physio for 3 treatments over the past 4 years. I'm supposed to do exercises daily, but like everything, once you feel better you generally forget about what you were recovering from.... until you do something stupid and end up back at the physio....:whistling

It usually takes 2 or 3 sessions for me to feel any different, but once it starts to feel right, you never look back....... hmmm that doesn't sound right......lol

It could very well be pot luck as to who you get, but if it doesn't start to feel right after a few sessions, i'd be looking else where.

Presumably a physio fixes the muscle damage; a chiro fixes the skeletal damage/misplacement?

As to whether or not you need to go to one, I'd imagine it's up to whether or not you want to take the risk. Professional as they may be, mistakes will always happen, and when it comes to your spine and the nerves within, you really don't want to be the one they happen to ;)

to right thats the last thing i want to happen. my back is bad enough as it is. maybe i should try some physio first and see how i go. im currently wearing a back brace to help me lift things at work but thats not enough.

Physio focuses on muscles, ligaments etc building up strength to alleviate any issues.

Chiro focuses on essentially snapping joints into place.

Personally I'd avoid a chiro at all costs, physio focuses on solving the issue moving forward, chiro just solves it temporarily. The long term issues associated with a poor practitioner in either can be long lasting, but chiro the effects can be far more catastrophic.

If you ring your local RMIT or large university and ask about who does the Chiro or Physio lectures you will often find they also practice as well and can recommend someone in your area I think Chiros are amazing so long as you get the right one, you should have on going treatment not just a once off and they should be interested in your history, send you for x-rays and also give you exercises to do during the week, I also get a massage once a month to help relax the area being worked on.

Hi ProphetVX

I have used the services of a Chiropractor for about ten years. The term "smapping joints into place" is far wide of the mark.

All of us suffer from wear and tear as we age and this wear is particularly savage in our vertebral discs. The spinal cord and nervous system can be severely "distressed" if these discs and vertebra are misaligned, which can easily occur.

A Chiro manipulates the joints to place them back into alignment, h/she does not snap them. The cracking sound that is often associated with a chiro manipulating joints is actually gases within the joint being released. I know it sounds odd, but I have encountered this phenomenon frequently when having joints manipulated and the chiro has explained what is happening when I have asked.

As stated in earlier posts, a physio works on muscular and soft tissue repair and maintenance, the chiro specialises in skeletal structures. The two treatments are totally different and can have different effects on pain relief. However, if your spine is misaligned, physio will not remedy the problem. It will help you to strengthen muscles to support the spine (or other damaged parts of the body) and ease the discomfort. I can state though, that having regular maintenance of your back and limbs by a chiro can remedy existing discomfort and prevent it recurring, but the maintenance must be regular. Don't stop it once the pain disappears.
