Yes, I could hear chattering.

Did the ECU need replacing or just reprogramming? Also do you think the mechanic could have knocked any wiring while doing a service and a few minor repairs recently?

It needed replacing, sent it to a place called injectronics where they will do the programming so all you have to do is plug the new one in.
