just finished doing head and cam work to my Y Series HSV Senator!!
Here Is the rundown

‎237/242 [email protected] Cam,
stainless 4-into-1's,
ported heads,
double row timing chain,
melling HV oil pump,
comp 1.72 ultra gold roller rockers
OTRCAI,
dual valve springs,
titanium retainers,
comp 7.4 H/D push rods,
victor reinz head gaskets,
lunati H/D LS7 lifters,
felpro gaskets,
ported throttle body
and other ****....

now a couple of questions

my oil pressure gauge will read around the 3 mark at idle but sometimes
go's all over the place

now... i think its a shitty gauge but i don't want to be to wrong!
it seems when i give it a whack its good for a bit
is this a common issue? any fix?

the engine has 116k on it and has been babied until the last 4,000
upon first start up it seems i have a blowby issue!

my oil filler cap is off as i have miss placed it some ware
and there is a slight constant stream of smoke coming from this
is this a common thing with ls1's i didn't pay much attention to it
as i was trying to work out the oil pressure gauge and keep an eye
on my oil pressure. but it may have gone away

i did all the work myself including the heads(deleted swirl ramps and
rocker stud lumps/general smoothing)
and went over everything twice before putting it back together

any thoughts would be great

sounds INSANE needs a touch of throttle to keep it running
but will be fine once tuned

also the check engine notice is on But i figured that probably
has to do with the extra duration and lift more than anything

regards

simon

Ok, couple things are standing out for me.

1. oil cap missing. Fairly confident this wouldn't be helping.
2. Oil pump pickup o ring. This is the first point of call for ANY car that has had a cam swap and is having oil pressure issues.
3. Smoke coming out the cap is normal. When oil gets hot it vaporises. Get the cap back on and no issue. :)

If the gauge was working before and now is showing issues, I would trust the gauge.

In regards to the check engine light, you've just changed the cam and other key components. Time for a tune!

Keen to hear how you go and what she pulls once you pop it on a dyno.

As Jester said pickup oring, may be pinched a little and did you get 2 springs with the pump red & blue?

also find an oil cap - how hard is it?

Fairly confident on my Pickup Oring's condition as it took me an hour to get it right
lucky i had 2 rings even though the 1st is still fine!

my oil gauge and voltage gauges used to play up after the car ad been sitting in the sun
for any amount of time so it leads me to think the gauges may be shitting its last brick

glad to here it is normal to have a bit of smoke! looking for the cap after dinner

Also MUNZ if you were doing the engine in one car, painting another and working on two customer cars at once you
would understand how easy it is to misplace **** ha ha and all at home LOL

Deffinatley looking forward to seeing what it will make on dyno for bragging rights

but i would like to see a lowish 11 pass after honing my skills

and maybe a tidy 300/320ish Kw @ the rears

also if you would like to know what it sounds like just look up LS1 MS3 cam's on Youtube very similar
cam to give you an idea

MUNZ i did get 2 springs and i removed the red and installed the blue!

because i had heard romours of your sump going dry with a high volume pump
and with the red high pressure spring

your thoughts?

I heard that too, as the red has 50psi @ idle where the blue retains 40psi @ idle

So your just going off the oil pressure gauge on your dash? any chance you could get one off the sensor for a better read

Like previously mentioned if you can get a gauge you know us good would be helpful but are you certain you put the oil pump spacer on the right way because if you put them on backwards then they block half of your port

Being a 'Y' series if its like my Vy ss, you should be able to scroll through the electronic dash menu with ignition on position 1 and as you scroll through you should come up with the items like battery voltage, oil pressure, etc then compare that to your gauge.

Yes its on the right way im going to check out the gauge 2moro!

didnt know you can bring up oil pressure on the dash will give it a go tommorrow

Also a strange question

dose the 1/3/5 marking on the gauge have any referance

mine idles at the 3 mark and with a slight rev 2k or so it is close to the 5
marking

would this be 10/30/50psi?

Possibly, how'd you go through the dash?
I'm 99.9% sure you can check it through ignition1 and menu settings.
