the local auto shop keeps steering me towards the monroe pair for $210 but i cant really afford it, i dont do hardcore drifting or 4wding i live in the adelaide which is all city, will the gabriel shocks do ok? they keep telling me id be making a bad choice if i went with them, whats so bad about em?

I'm sure the gabriel shocks will be fine, My cousin brought some cheap ebay shocks for his vr about 6 months ago and has had no problems.

Before I lowered the vn and put Monroe shocks in it, the rears were Gabriel shocks.. They still have pressure and I kept them with the stock springs in the shed

I have ultima shocks in mine, not that great barely noticed the difference over the old 180,000km worn out ones and few years later with 100,000 on the ultima the rear left squeaks like hell, and yes, 100% positive its the shocker as I removed it and it squeaked when I pumped it and the car didn't squeak without the shocker in it.

talked to a few experts on the matter, have been recommended a choice of 3. Monroe GT gas( best bang for buck, great performer for not much cash) koni (expensive but very good) Bilstein (slightly better than koni, much more expensive).

Boge is another really good one if you can find them, German brand.

Adelaide... You need decent shocks for the potholes!
