How to check if you inlet manifold gasket is leaking?

would a buggered inlet manifold gasket make a car cough and carry on when it first starts?

I've found the leak!!!!

The water pump is leaking feom underneath as well as the top of the oil sump is leaking. Why would this be? All the top of the sump is covered in coolant?

i've recently just got home from work so all the coolant has dried up because of the heat from the car.

hmm also guys, did i buy the right replacement water pump? not too sure if i need to replace the back part or just the front part with the gaskets..

this is what i bought, as seen in the pictures

seal in the water pump most likely, the other part of the pump that fails.
Yes it's the correct pump, they come with 2 gaskets because s1 vn engines use a plate behind the pump and require 2 gaskets, vn s2/vp/vr/ecotecs only require 1 gasket. (and yes i know there wasn't really a s1 s2 vn it just makes it easier to describe parts)

this is upto you to decide but if replacing all that you are so far i'd add all the hoses to the list also, if you fix all the leaks and it builds enough pressure and the hoses are old and soft, it may burst/split them.

Get some flamable spray (Like morteen, aerostart ect) and spray it around the inlet manifolds. If the engine increases rpm (It will only slightly increase as there is no more air going into the motor, and not much will get through, so don't stress) then that is where your leak is.
If the RPM doesn't budge, you're golden. If you are unsure, start by spraying some down the air filter box to know the slight increase you are looking for.
Old mechanics trick my father taught me :)

lol mortein, most people give the car a good thrash to blow the cobwebs out... i like the idea of killing the spiders before they build them though
