I'm in the process of dismantling a stock 2001 V6 engine and need to undo the bolt holding on the harmonic balancer (also which way does it undo) The engine is in a stand and the heads, inlet manifold and sump has been removed. Would bolting a 2 foot piece of steel across the flange that holds on the flywheel do the job to allow me to turn the bolt without turniing over the engine.

Use a big impact gun. 3/4" should do the job. If you're really lucky you may be able to do it with a 1/2" one. If it's still in the car it's easy - you use the starter motor to do all the work for you. On an engine stand, you won't have much fun without the right tools.

Yeah rattle guns the way to go. I had a real tough one recently the starter motor and breaker bar didn't even to the job. Literally started lifting the car haha. The biggest rattle gun we had at work didn't do it either. Ended up having to heat the bolt till it was red hot (and melting all the rubber in the balancer lol) then the rattle gun got it. Hope yours ain't that bad haha. Good luck man.

This tool is absolutely brilliant for undoing Harmonic Balancer Bolts:

SP Tools Balancer Bolt Loosening Tool SP70865.jpg

Here is the link to the SP Tools website
They can be purchased cheaper than the advertised price on the website though if you shop around.

Used my 1/2'' supercheap SCA impact gun and was I surprised how easy it unbolted.
Now to buy 3 only M6 bolts for the puller.

That poor donk has had a hard life in the cooling system. Goes to show how much abuse they can handle.

Thanks for the update.

The threads aren't metric in the harmonic balancer.
You will need 3 bolts that are: 1/4" UNF x 2 1/2" long

Actually its clean that red coloring (digital camera) is from where the engine had been sitting for a several years.
I took the water pump off and no corrosion and no wear but it to is getting replaced.
