Ok update. For some reason I didn't notice yesterday :-/
But the only time the indicator goes off when the car is on is when the indicator fuse is removed.
took the indicator stalk out, light stayed on.
ah frustrating.

Found the problem. Main wiring under the dash was the problem. Some of the plastic round some of the wiring had cracked and touched causing a short and also melted and few wires including the main earth.
Lucky the car didn't catch fire.
Car is 12 years old now, so I got them to check the rest of the wires in the car too. Was expensive but at least I know everything is fine now
