Ah no. Not just another mechanic bashing thread... As I stated, I got it cheaper elsewhere. So not ALL mechanics are rip offs. But I do find that when it comes to girls or as stated above, people who arent quite sure of what the problem is a majority of them are...
And as for, 'do it yourself' I thought that's why mechanics did their certs and whatnot? So that other people didn't have to do it themselves?

Its just a dollars game. If they get 2 customers paying $400 for a $200 job its easy money compared to doing 4 cars at $200.
$155 sounds very cheap tho ... i'd be sceptical about the quality of their work. While the springs are out it usually pays to replace strut tops at the same time.

Ahhh, yet another mechanic bashing thread, here we go again. If you all know so much or think you're getting ripped blind, why don't you do it yourself?

On the other hand, i love customers that "self diagnose", that makes my day :p

Like I said earlier.. give the mechanic a quick run down of the problem and let him make the diagnosis. If it seems wrong, sure, question it. If you already know the answer, you shouldnt have needed to ask though.

You have a noise in the engine so you go to the mechanic and say... 'I have a noise in my engine, how much for a new engine?'

The mechanic can then quote you on a new engine, because you have diagnosed yourself as needing a new engine. Its not his problem. He'll just do as you asked. Most mechanics will try and talk you out of it anyway, but he would be totally within his rights to just say 'ok sure, heres the quote'.

Ask him 'Whats that noise in my engine?' and he may lean down and straighten up the bit of plastic that was rubbing on the drive belt instead of replacing your engine. He knows what he is doing, thats why you went to him.

Do you insist on being awake during heart surgery so you can check that the doc is not actually operating on your liver? If you employ a professional to do a job, you are paying for their knowledge and experience. If you dont trust them, dont use them.

If you have trust issues with mechanics, simply go to a workshop with a good reputation that has been there a long time. You will most likely pay a little more, but you will not get ripped off. You get what you pay for. Ripoff merchants do not stay in business for a long time so a long established business is generally a pretty safe bet.

Today I called a well known suspension specialist in my area and asked about getting my car lowered and wheel alignment. I was quoted $400 all up and I was supplying the springs... I then had to wake my boyfriend up (he does night shift!) just so that he could call around for me because apparently as soon as they hear a female voice they assume we don't know what a fair price is. I now have it booked in elsewhere for a total price of $155. Has anyone else had this problem?! I find it really annoying and this is not the first time this has happened!!

Just to offer another point of view. I find it really annoying when people ring up for a quote and baulk at the fair price they're given, only to take their car to dodgey bros mechanics down the road who quote less. Then they end up crying about the exorbitant bill they get from the hidden extras or other pointless stuff they've been scammed for. Or they end up coming back a short time later when dodgey brothers sub-standard work has reared it's ugly head in the form of other problems.

Mechanical work costs money people, diagnostic work also costs money, even the time taken to work out a quote costs money. Most shops charge over $100 an hour these days and the majority of jobs take an hour at least. I would question the quality of work of any shop that charges less and especially a shop that can supply shocks and struts and fit them and coils for $155 including a wheel alignment.

If you want to save money then get a workshop manual like gregory's or Haynes and learn to do it yourself.

ive got one machanic.. ONE! not 50. and i think thats half your problem not your gender

find a machanic you like and give him your business all the time. he will remember you and discount you accordingly, by all means tho ring around and find a rough quote for the work. but if you have a regular machanic thats friendly and worth his salt he's going to look after you and your car because he can tell you only go to him for repairs and its repeat business.

but remember

$400 is abit much, but $155 is too little... remember the old saying.. you get what you pay for.

I can only speak for myself but I take my car to a mechanic If its a job I don't have the tools for, or if the job is a regular pain in the arse to do in a gravel driveway.
My mechanic is a gun (but not cheap) and he appreciates me diagnosing faults because it saves his guys heaps of time- they just quickly check over what I've told them and start working.
The main issue I've had in the past is if I need to see an auto elec, suspension specialist etc or someone else that I don't know personally sometimes they don't listen to what I'm telling them, overquote to cover their troubles, then don't fix the issue I've gone to them for.

What do you do for a job... Just interested... Do you help people out that you don't know?
