Hmmm, almost sounds like a diff backlash issue, but diagnosing sounds over forum posts isn't really a thing that works well.

Would definitely take it to somebody (or back to your mate) if you don't really know what to look for as stuff like bushes can look good but only deform under load. Metallic looking residue at the bottom of the transmission pan is pretty normal (it's why there's usually a magnet there), it's when you have big specs of metal in it that it's an issue, and the trans would probably have died pretty quickly after it started making that noise if it was on its way out. Don't be too worried if it's the diff, you should be able to pick up another 3.08 open diff reeeeeally cheap, like $50 cheap.

Regarding your question about labour and trans rebuild, around $100 an hour is not uncommon, would probably budget for $3k-$3.5k total for basic standard trans rebuild. Whoever you take it to should be able to give you a pretty accurate quote given how common they are, but I'd still try to just get a good second hand one.
