GF-3 is just the next level of specs. which help keep down valve train wear, fuel economy, semi synth. high detergent level and helps keep piston temps. down and deposits as well as ring sticking.
This is just a little bit of the whole thing some one might want to add more details, I believe they are up to GF-4 but the price always goes up as well.
Other people like there own brands of oil. There is so many different types now that is why I stick to what Holden recommend.
