I waited, somewhat impatiently but well clear of their escort vehicle at their rear, for 5km until there was a place to safely pass.

As I passed their group of well over 100 cyclists, taking more than 100m of the road ahead, the driver of the van stuck his head out the window and shouted 'are you effing blind mate, cant you read the sign on the back of the van?'.

Yes, I could. It said 'caution, cyclists ahead'. It didnt say 'no passing, cyclists ahead' and even if it did, as far as I am concerned it would have been a waste of a sign without a police escort, because its not enforcable.

Many of the cyclists filpped the bird at me as I went cautiously went past, giving them as much room as I was able.

I dont consider being pissed off at this as behaving like a neanderthal, sorry. I consider their behaviour rude, inconsiderate, and arrogant.

^^This annoys me, i too would be pissed off if they did the same thing to me. Going by what you said, you did everything right and they treated you like you were "just another car zooming past too fast/close"

That part of your story give you fair right to rant about it.

But everyone needs to remember, not all people are the same. Some car drivers are tossers, and some bike riders are tossers. but it isn't a blanket stereo type, not everyone acts like this on the road.

Everyone needs to eat a sandwich and chill the f%^k out!
