If you mean the gear knob on a manual, I just unscrew mine. I have no reverse gear lock out.

yeah its quite hard the first time, you just have to pull from the base of the knob part and kinda pull outwards at the same time. after you've got it off for the first time all the bits that help hold the knob on kinda die a bit and it becomes alot easier to take it off in future

For a manual, screw the knob anti-clock wise :)

is there any internal connection to the reverse lock thing because the bit u pull up to put it in reverse goes inside the gear knob?

The standard T5 has no reverse lockout. Towards you > down = reverse. If this isnt the case then its not a standard box and I have no idea :)

Basically the majority of manual knobs unscrew.

Wait, I'm confused. You sure it isnt auto? I know you can shift between certain gears without having to lift the handle. Or is it a ratchet-like shifter by any chance? That would make sense, I think.
