A classic Australian muscle car has been stolen during a break in at Lara.

It is understood the early-70s HQ Monaro was stolen sometime over the weekend, along with a BMW motorbike, tools, a TV and computer.

Home owner Kim says he flew out for his job as a crane driver in Western Australia on Friday night.

He says a neighbour heard the car start around 5am Sunday.

Kim believes thieves got into the Rennie Street property through a back window.

The burglary was discovered on Monday.

Kim, who is now on his way back home, says he is gutted and believes he may have been targeted as he is often away for work.

The Monaro is white with a black stripe and has the registration LOV-866.

The registration of the red 1996 Commodore is NSP-497, while the registration for the 2006 BMW motorbike is HP-252.

Anyone with information is asked to call Corio police on 52 739 555 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

his daughter put on facebook:

"$10,000 REWARD for the return of my dads HQ Monaro stolen from Lara early Sunday morning, must be returned in same condition it left & no questions asked. LOV•866 rego"

i ask everyone keep an eye out and treat it asif it was your pride and joy that was stolen.

Do you know if they caught the wankers who flogged it in the first place or did someone return it for the cash?

as far as the story goes, its still behind closed doors. this could have something to do with the police and going to court or it could mean someone took the money and ran.

the FB post says 'they couldnt be happier' im only taking a wild guess but to me that says car remains as one. possibly they took it for a joy ride, had some fun, then hid it away from the world.

either way, its very rare a stolen car is found and returned. so im absolutely ecstatic for the bloke and can only imagine the way he feels right now.

bit more insight, mate told me the guy dumped the car. so obviously he was shitting himself.

on the local radio station website

A classic and very expensive Australian muscle car has turned up three weeks after being stolen from Lara.

The 1971 HQ Monaro, worth around $200,000, was taken from a Rennie Street home last month.

It was finally found in Grovedale over the weekend with the thanks of social media.

im actually surprised it turned up in grovedale. its roughly a 30-40 min drive and i dont know how the car wasnt spotted driving if it was stolen in daylight. makes me wonder if it was taken to house nearby or if they used an enclosed trailer

car thieves, scum of the earth.

Happy ending to this story - you always think the worst that they find a burnt out shell.
