I have an 08 SS 6ltr 6 speed auto. reverse and 2nd gear flair and slip. When cold 1st and 2nd gear grinding noise on take off. Oil in transmission changed to try and rule out issue with less cost first. car done 90000klm. oil was black when changed. issues continued. It appears that perhaps the oil not pumping through when cold?? after doing the rounds with auto trans people (over the phone due to distance of my location plus in conjunction with my local mechanic) i am told that a new transmission is needed. Can the pump be replaced on it's own without the whole transission? is there any sensors that could be an issue? I'm not mechanically minded but love my car. I'm after advice from all of you.

Have you tried resetting the TAP cells? Do this with a Tech2 or such. My 'box was playing up a bit. Felt a little like slipping sometimes when accelerating, and a bit like it was jumping in and out of gear, especially when going downhill in manual mode using engine braking. As it was in for a service, and I'd tried a few other things, I requested a gearbox service. Holden didn't think it would do much as it wasn't near due and tried the reset first. 30,000kms later and it's been perfect since. Just an idea to try.

oil was black when changed.

This is never a good sign, a possibility that some clutch packs have been fried, or the fluid has overheated and killed it's lubricity.

Was there any sludge in the pan when they dropped it?

08 SS my auto box is fairly jumpy and rough especially when cold 1st- 2nd revs out way to much and jolts the car forward heaps,

like it's nice and responsive in manual mode if your giving it a bit but back in normal mode it's not a nice gearbox imo, took mine to a transmission specialist last week to diagnose mine for this issue and ofc wouldn't do it for him when he test drove. He did say it's not shuddering so that's a good sign the piston isn't cracked common for VE SS box he told me.

Say I'm climbing a hill at say 30-40km in traffic the gearbox can't instantyl smoothly kick back a gear and stalls for a few seconds then kicks back a gear it's really annoying Or slowing down for the traffic lights then they change so i accelerate and there's the delay again in finding what gear...

@ Muke what's this tech 2 process you can do to it ? How is this done?

Tech2 is the scan tool that Holden use. The TAP cells are the learning that the gearbox does. They're supposed to learn how you drive and change a little. Stands for Transmission Adaptive Pressure. So its re-writing the information, and all your doing is resetting it back to original values. I'm sure other scan tools would be able to do it, but have no idea what ones. I only know Holden's Tech2 scan tool can for sure. Your mechanic might be able to. Not saying this will definitely work for you, but it did for me and is quick and simple to do (if you have the tool available).

I got a box reset through Holden as I was experiencing flare in 2-3-4 gears. I also had pre purchased the wide mouth deep pan camaro transmission kit and had it fitted directly after with a total fluid flush. The tranny is magic now.

That's the one, bought it from Pace as well.
For the TAP reset I just logged a complaint with the stealership which they 'couldn't replicate' (because doing so would admit to a problem) and they reset the TAP to appease me and send me on my merry way.

Okay cool thanks for the info mate going to do these mods.

Edit: Would it be a better idea to do the bigger sump first then get the TAP Reset?
