Ok thanks. Being a previous (in my younger years), a backyard mechanic working on Holden red motors and gear boxes, the symptoms are baffling and very strange - mind you no PCV valves on a red motor ! Thanks for the hints and tips and I will explore them to check off more items on the list.
If I ever get this solved I will post the solution.
Thanks.

There was a PCV valve on the Red Motors.

Top of the Rocker Cover to a hose that went the side of the inlet manifold.

Remove the plugs and see which one’s are different colour, possible a bit more carbon than others,
That should give you an idea of which cyl/s is/are the culprits.
Then you can start a process of elimination on that side, or both sides.

You're thinking grey engines, they just dumped overboard.

Yep, the black dump pipe down the side,

I stand corrected, I think the 149 & 179 had the dump pipe.

Geez. I dunno. I had a red 179 and later an HR with a 186. I don’t recall a PCV valve … they were great motors in classic cars !
Thanks for the suggestion regarding the plugs … that should reveal something to start with ..

Not sure when the PCV valve came into effect with the reds, but they sure did have them.

That being mentioned, certainly worth checking your PCV system on your car

all engines have to have some form of crank case pressure relief, otherwise they will just be a leaky mess, even the flathead ford back in the 30's use the exhaust flow to create a vacuum to counter the crank case pressures
