Different block - S1 dog turd (rope) rear main seal
S2 one peice seal - you can hook it out without dropping the
sump and taking off the rear main cap. EV6 cast on side of block

Different cranks- S1 six bolt rear flange, different man/auto.
S2 eight bolt rear flange, same man/auto.
(covered here https://forums.justcommodores.com.au/threads/v6-crankshaft-info.63206 )

Different Heads - extra passage on S2 intake face, double springs on S1 singles on S2

Oil pressure relief spring - stiffer on S2

Hideous factory 'headers' on S1, cast manifolds S2

:blah blah::blah blah:

and as mentioned in previous posts , no doubt theres more too

VN S1 engine- torque monster with different shape intake manifold (plenum and runner shapes are different, but visually hard to tell from above), different cam, no restrictor into manifold from TB (which S2 had). Generally ran outta puff about 4500, whereas the S2 motors were good to make power to approv 4800-5000ish.

Small piece of trivia (cant remember where from tho? LOL) >

The original 88 vintage VN V6 made more power and torque than the VL 3L turbo engine everywhere until its 4400rpm peak, after which the silky smooth RB kept pulling. to make the additional 25kW (125kW vs 150kW respectively).

And if i remember, the VN manual was credited with some very fast 1/4 times in both auto and manual form in its initial testing- mid 15s? Which was the same as the VL turbo.

Oh, and the tune in the ECU for the S1 was a bit more aggressive in its low-end fuel and ignition mapping> im running the ECU from my brother's 88 Vn in my S2 VN wagon, when it was jsut n/a it did give her a bit more "snap" down low (i got from a 16.2 to a 16.03 at WSID just from installing the S1 ecu).

Plenty of changes along the way, plenty of places to read about them too. Do a search, although luckily some people have covered it quite well here. If planning FI, it won't matter which engine you get, so just take a later one for ease of changing plugs on the driver's bank (very annoying on the early models)
