so thats the plug going into the panel behind the glovebox. pulling the plug out as pictured didnt help. any other suggestions that i can try?

Oh dear... that's not the correct plug. That unit is your fan speed controller. The harness your looking for is directly below the radio on the left. Will try and get a photo for you...

haha. that might explain why it didnt work then 
... thanks for the photo. i'll get that panel off and have a look around in there this arvo. looks like theres a lot of wires there. hopefully i can find the right one this time. its a good start to be looking in the right place. cheers again tasmaniac
