just a straight bit of pipe that joing them together, As for the reason its there, "god only knows" and the idiots who design these things.

That pipe could be a reducer for hot water flow.
Don`t know why.
Have a look at number 13 reducer on a VS V6.

this diagram shows the heater valve connecting to the top of the manifold ( a vertical connector) up near the throttle body - not to the water pump. Can someone confirm.

Return hose would go to the pump, for suction, supply would be via the manifold near the thermostat.
That is how mine is as per the drawing posted above.
