My VY crewman ss manual has the emission information sticker on the radiator cover and it shows 850 idle rpm for manual V8

A defunct coolant temp sender might tell the ECU the engine is cold, and have it idle higher. Try putting the trip computer into diagnostic mode. Hold down Mode and Set as you turn the ignition on, then hit mode until you get to "coolant temp". Do you see some sane looking numbers?

Probably not the problem, but only takes a few mins and no money or tools to check.

well i wouldn't say it's running cold, i would say hot if anything as my gauge needle sits around half when normal driving and higher when round town driving

How's your battery? could it be alternator or AC pump load compensation?

ok got the idle sorted, took it tuner and had it dropped by 200RPM WOW now sounds like a V8 idling at 650RPM and have no problems driving it.
