Its not an easy job, just so you know, even if you have the manual.

I am scared...
Did you have to change the chains or was there another reason for opening it up. If it was for the chains, what were the symptoms, what were the kms you had to do it?
I bought a VZ the other day because the EL was due for retirement, (the Mrs wanted something with front and side air bags, elec windows, cruise control and no faded paint or rust lol). But I never had to touch the engine or g/b on that old EL - just rad, fuel pump, shocks, dizzy, coil... :p

My VZ might be having the similar problems - has someone had this type of repair done? How much did it cost?

You didnt specify if it was a 5.7 or 3.6L. It is a big job trust me and def don't go half assed in to it and try save some dollars. Buy everything you need, chains, tensioners, guides, gaskets etc. Dealership here for the 3.6 is almost a $4000 job. Takes more than 8 hours.

Just to add you will want to get RCG's, intake gaskets as they tear when you pull it off, Water pump, may aswell do thermostat while your in there as its easy access, all seals, oil change will need to be done afterwards as water drops into sump from WP, the oil pump chain needs to be adjusted, which can be done without taking sump off, if you want to do that chain also then its a sump off. A mechanic at $60 an hour is pretty cheap and personally i would be questioning there skills. Time this up wrong and your ...................
