They're not overpriced. You just need to know a little about cars and where to source parts from. I upgraded my turbo on my old Audi A4. In Australia they wanted $3500 for the turbo, I managed to source one from the USA for $1200 landed. Same as the C Class. I wanted to install the Command Sat Nav head unit which was close to $3000 in Australia. Managed to get one for $800 landed.
This is a site I used to buy stuff from for my 2000 Audi A4 Quattro, 2004 Mercedes C Class and now my Golf R - www.ecstuning.com. There are many other places too. Pick a car you're after and research it using the relevant forums.
If you're lazy and leave everything to the mechanic of course you'll pay more. They're not going to waste time and try find the cheapest price for parts.
