all jokes aside a LS3 or L77 would be a good start IMO.

Do a compression / leakdown test, that should give you an idea of how healthy the current engine is.

I have seen VT/WH with 250+k km have cams put in and run fine, I personally would also change lifters. Like some of the other people have said, could be worth considering an LS3 / L77 crate motor if you're considering rebuilding, depends on how much power you want and what you want to do with the car.
