Bought a VS, ecotec, runs fine, idles great, BIG knock at 1500-1800.
Sounds like one gudgeon or a cracked piston, not deep like a big end.
What's the go with the balance shaft? Can it sound like this?
I'm about to start pulling it to bits so any info is appreciated.
Regards.

Ok, it was big ends. Completely buggered in 180000K's.
My old Rb30 jigger has over 400000 and is still going strong.
My Rb20det has 200000+ and is so sweet you can't hear it running.
My VP had 280000 as my company car so I bought it, drove to Perth, all the West Coast, back via the bottom and she never missed a beat. Guess I should have kept it, hey.
Not impressed.

Interesting how many oil pump failures in the Ecotec engine failure thread. I'm about to get to that and I'm off to buy those Torx sockets.
Without a doubt the worst engine I've ever worked on and I include VW's mini's etc. I thought the VG30 in a 300ZX was hard to get at but at least Nissan uses plugs in the wiring so you don't have to remove the whole harness just to get the engine out. And how's the access to that right exhaust flange.
I'm way too old for this rubbish.....Really thought you couldn't go wrong with a Commo, big mistake.

Ok, oil pump is fine, the whole engine is just as you'd expect one to be after 180000k's. Timing chain is well within tolerence too so it comes down to new big ends and mains.
Unhappy that I didn't find something obviously wrong.
Are owners simply not changing oil frequently enough?
With my turbo engines, I change oil at 3-5000K's and do a filter mid change at around 1500-2000K's.
That's expensive when using Mobil 1 hence the purchase of a Commo. Thought I could save some hard earned.

Now I've just got to put it all back in............
