Vented/Fluted Guards - just for looks?

Newbie question.

I've seen a lot of after-market vented/fluted guards for sale.

A lot of people install them for the look; I get that.

But, installed in a standard Commodore or Adventra, would they actually DO anything useful?
What is behind the vented panel? Would you need air ducts to the engine bay or something to provide cooling?

Theyre purely cosmetic.

Underneath them is more panel work / chassis.
