In need of new tailgate gas struts for my VE wagon. Nearly fell over when I got a quote from a local dealer so went online and found a set for $49.95 from Braumach. Are these a good choice? Any feedback would be helpful. Thank.

I have always used Braumach. Have them on three VZ bonnets, one VZ boot lid and on the hard lid for the Crewman.

They have never let me down. As good as factory.

I also have then on my -

VE Bonnet, and Tailgate
VZ Adventra, Bonnet, Tailgate & Rear Window,
VY Bonnet.

There are others around but do they last the test of time.

They are very easy to replace,
Need another pair of hands to assist with holding the tailgate up, or a piece of timber,
Small Flat blade screw driver, and carefully lift the. Clip (not remove it) and pull it off the ball mount on both ends,
But do it one strut at a time,
Should take no more than 15 minutes.
That’s including drinking a coffee,
Or
a beer in the afternoon

Possibly the stealer would charge $90 to do it, (which is their minimum charge for the hour, and got the apprentice to do it) and have the car for half a day and make it a inconvenient for the customer

Late to the conversation, but thought I'd add for others. I replaced my tailgate ones maybe 2 years ago and thoroughly satisfied with the Repco ones. I was a little dubious, but they're actually very good. Easy to fit but another set of hands makes it simple.

VZ Maloo? Do you have a photo of this bus, mainly the lid? I'd like new struts on mine and was unsure of which ones would be decent as I have a pretty heavy hardlid.

What is it with the tailgate struts on these wagons? We had ours replaced not long after we bought the car because they were pretty weak, and to be honest, the ones the dealer replaced them with were not much better.
I banged my feckin head on the tailgate yesterday because the feckin thing didn’t go up as it should.
Maybe time to source some new and stronger ones myself.

When I have to replace mine, I will use slightly heavier duty ones. I’ll take a look in the morning at what they are rated at and what brand.

That would be good, my tonneau is heavy as and you really need two arms to raise it with the struts I have.

I used a plastic primer. Then a filler primer because of the cracking in the rubberised finish. Sanded as smooth as possible, then a satin black epoxy.
