Usually your oil starts smelling like fuel when that happens, so wouldnt that be a place to check? Pull dipstick and have a sniff to see if it smells like oil, or fuel soaked oil?

Leak wise they are pretty good. Yes you'll need to drill holes. Best bet is to mount it and look for air gaps. The upper tailgate will never seal 100% onto the lower tailgate

I dont know, i guess if they found someone wrecking an early, you could mod the harness to suit, save the modding the shaft on the actual box itself. Just depends on how far they are willing to go. I mean if their 6 cyl box meant nothing to them, they could strip it for the shaft, or even cut...
