Thanks gavpav going the inland route as its much quicker. Flying up there in 3 weeks to organise a few things then back to melbourne for a week and then the long drive :D cant wait to live in cairns!

im insured with racv have full roadside assistance etc im guessing that would cover me around through nsw and queensland through racq etc

Will have to think about that if i could get to queensland on day 1 gives me a nice easy drive next two days just fill up a nice big cup of coffee and use the two fuel stops i would make as my breaks for 15 mins.

Would be nice to travel at night but im driving by myself so will be safer during the day if i had a 2nd driver would definitely drive at night. I guess slowing down for a caravan and overtaking will keep me alert rather than getting comfortable on 110 with the cruise on

Whats traffic like on the Newell? Just had a look it will be a few hours faster than my other route so looking like the better option try and hit Narrabri on my first day following that route then onto the carnarvon towards emerald

going to be going inland traffic shouldnt be bad? plan on doing roughly 2 12 hour days and last day 10 but i should be able to get out of vic fairly quickly as i know the roads cameras etc that will take a chunk out of my time

appreciate that mate will take it into account what are roadside speed cameras like around there

i normally just use regular unleaded but end of the day its much much cheaper to drive it up than put it on a truck

Thanks for all the info i plan to drive up mid april spent today planning the route but basically going to go Melbourne to Bourke NSW first day Bourke to Emerald second day and Emerald to Cairns. Going to refuel at each half way point approx every 450k's which should be fine hwy k's my commodore...

just had a look as im p2 im allowed to go a maximum 100km/h which is much much better than 90 that would stuff up my trip by a few hours

just wondering as i am on my p2 licence now what are the nsw rules on the freeways are we restricted to 90km/h even though my licence is victorian?

i love the weather anyway even summer i can tolerate spend all of december/jan up there cant stand melbourne cold anymore

yeah i have heard about lots of road works, after the first day which i am to do 12 hours i will make up my mind whether i continue on my 3 day plan or change it to 4

Moving to cairns in 2 months time and i am taking the car with me. Im driving a 2005 vz commodore just wondering what i should do to prepare the car before i leave aiming to do the trip in 3 days. What is the best route to take mitchell hwy or a7 in regards to road conditions.
