NEVER remove a thermostat from a motor which has electronic engine management and fuel injection, the motor is designed to run within a specific temp range. Rather find and correct the problem, the problem in this case sounds like the thermostat.

had the same problem, all i did was take off the cluster front cover and put a tiny bit of lube around the speedo needle shaft, and its been good since then (2 yrs)

had the same problem, turned out to be the throttle cable was worn and coming apart

been there and tried that, the biggest improvement that I had fuel economy wise is after I cleaned the throttle body + IAC and fitted a performance filter and CAI, the magnets on the fuel line made no difference at all

have you checked your air filter, sounds like a dirty / blocked air filter, then check plugs and leads, then O2 sensor , coolant temp sensor, and injectors. BUT first check the air filter

check your radiator (overflow on s1) cap, as its very comon for them to play up

Had the same problem, turned out to be the 2 surge/overflow hoses which run from the filler neck down to the tank were broken, easy enough job to replace, but you need to drop the tank to get at them.

definitely run PULP in your cars, run smoother burn cleaner and economy is better, here in the sticks (Bendigo) at the local Apco, unleaded is $1.39, while PULP is $1.43, which is a dif of about 3 % , while the economy is at least 5 % better.

remember to reset your IAC after doing the CAI mod, and you will definitely notice an improvement,and while you are about it , you might as well give the throttle body a good clean.
