I got an SMS from a mate of mine the other day about an interesting historical fact.

The 1985 Ford Escort RS 200 on road tyres managed a 2.2 second 0-100, and pumped out a jaw dropping 1.8 second 0-100 on slicks.

As if that wasn't scary enough, this was all accomplished with a 2.175L 4 cylinder turbo engine pushing 537kW, stock.

A modified version won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb in the unlimited class in 2004. It was putting out 626kW with 949Nm of torque, and managed a staggering 0-200 in 6 seconds flat.

Not bad for a 20 year old 2.175L 4 cylinder engine, even if it is a Ford.

His right Troy. The car is not an Escort just called the Ford RS 200. Designed and built in about 1985 to Group B rally regulations. Times Genesis quotes is on tarmac however I would love to know times on gravel as this was also where the car was used. Times are also for the competition car. Only used in the WRC for a few years due to rule changes. Only 200 cars were built. Even today you can pick one up for about $180k. Try the address below to read a bit about it.

Hmm.. one of my favourite cars. As stated before, this car was so fast that they ruled it out of rally.

I actually went to the link at the bottom of the Wikipedia page. On the RS 200 website build No. 153, an EVO S :w00t: is own by Rob Sherrard and he lives in Australia. It was apparently used in this years Rally Tasmania.

AWESOME little cars....absolutely amazing use of technology...
It also used the time-worn technique of no weight and shedloads of power... :w00t: ...they must be a blast to drive and are a truly historic vehicle...I don't care what badge they have!!!

To digress, speaking of famous cars, I saw a review of an Aston Martin Vantage, which complained because it "only" had 380 hp!!!!
They have it all wrong...English sports cars may not have massive power, but they have excellent handling...American cars use the horsepower overload to cover up the bad handling...they tend to rely on skidpan G-force results as a mark of how good a car handles...for some unknown reason that no other car maker in the world does... For instance, they quote how the new Corvette pulls something like 1.4G on the skidpan...a funny comment I saw years ago (by a British motoring writer about a Corvette pulling 1G) said "Yes, but a Morris Minor with the suspension welded up solid could pull the same G-loading on a skidpan...real roads have curves and hills..." A lot of large-car-even-bigger-engine drivers on twisty mountain roads have been embarassed over the decades by a capable driver in an MG or a Morgan or something similar with a cast-iron 4 cylinder up front...:D :D :D

I guess what I'm saying is that the RS200 used a lot of British and Eurpoean Ford bits from the parts bin, and went by the English philosophy of "make it handle well first, worry about the power later!" :D
