Yeah - ALWAYS tell your insurance company about any mods, no matter how small... 99% of the time it won't cost you any more (or at least not very much more) to insure the car with mods unless they are really extreme.

But insurance companies will always look for an "out" when paying a claim. That is, after all how they make their profits - by limiting the amount of the claims they pay. Don't give them a reason to fill their pockets any more!

Anyway - back to topic, it looks like most people seem to be under the impression that change in the size of the the outer rim of the tyre is the most important factor and not the rim size.

On face value, I would say your friend has a very good case...
