... depends

if the sump gasket is the later rubber dimpled type... possible if you are very careful
if the early cork type... no way. VR should be rubber but you don't know
if someone previously has had the sump off and replaced the gasket with cork

the issue is that the timing cover has to come off from the block ... in a straight line
to get it off the locating pins and you will root the cork gasket at the bottom when that happens

people say.. drop the sump if the sump gasket is cork to avoid that
but the sump will leak badly if you do drop the sump and then tighten it

Thanks I replaced the sump gasket yesterday morning (its permaseal brand if that makes a difference) its cork on the sides but rubber on the ends.. then was informed that I have to remove it to change timing cover seal and I really dont wanna go wasting the work I did on the sump.

The seal goes in from the outside take the balancer off dog out the old seal and bang the new one in with a block of wood with a hole in it for the crank to fit through

I thought they meant the crank seal as well.

Methinks they meant timing cover gasket as that's only thing in contact with sump.

Must admit was confused reading it the first time haha
